Fernanda Nissen.

The implosion of capitalism, av Samir Amin, London: Pluto Press, 2013, 150 s.

The race for what´s left. The global scramble for the world´s last resources, av Michael T. Klare, New York: Metropolitan Books, 2012/2013, 306 s.

Capitalism´s last stand? Deglobalization in the age of austerity, av Walden Bello, London: Zed Books, 2013, 282 s.

Karl Marx. A nineteenth-century life, av Jonathan Sperber, New York/London: Liveright Publishing Corporation, 2013/2014, 648 s.

Almost all his writing appeared in the publications of the IS and SWP or has been published by related publishing houses, such as Bookmarks. He was first editor of Socialist Worker in 1976-77 and returned to the role after a break in 1982, remaining in the post until 2004, when he started editing the SWP’s theoretical quarterly International Socialism Journal.

Harman’s work on May 1968 in France and other student and workers uprisings of the late 1960s, The Fire Last Time, was recommended by rock band Rage Against the Machine in their album sleeve notes for Evil Empire.
Harman died on 7 November 2009, following a cardiac arrest while lecturing at the Socialist Days conference of the Center for Socialist Studies (CSS) in Cairo, Egypt. He is buried in Highgate Cemetery, London, a few yards from Karl Marx’s tomb and adjacent to his comrade Paul Foot.»

    13) CHINA´S RISE: STRENGTH and FRAGILITY, By Au Loong Yu, et al, Resisatnce Books, IIRE (Amsterdam) and Merlin Press, 2012, ISBN 978 0 85036 637 2. This new book published by Merlin Press in association with Resistance Books and the IIRE features contributions by Bai Ruixue, Pierre Rousset and Bruno Jetin alongside the main work by Au Loong-Yu, a leading global justice campaigner in Hong Kong, editorial board member of China Labor Net and contributor to International Viewpoint.

It comprises a collection of essays which look at the inherent contradiction in the rise of China from a class perspective. It argues that China is a bureaucratic capitalist state, which is a special kind of state capitalism.

Også: One China, Many Paths, Edited by Wang Chaohua, Verso, 2003:

    Where is China going?

«Two fundamental questions about China over the last decade confront the left: Is the country heading definitively towards capitalism, and are there strong enough pro-socialist forces to reverse the course?

There is little interaction between those living inside China who are seeking to make such assessments, and those outside the country. One China, Many Paths provides a starting point to facilitate those interactions with the English-speaking world.

Wang Chaohua’s 40-page introduction and the first chapter, an extensive interview with Wang Hui, editor of the highly influential Dushu magazine, are especially important. They draw out a basic contour of the multiplicity of debates within China on where the country has gone since 1978 (the beginning of the so-called reform period).

The book’s goal is to present an overall view of the nature and character of the various debates, featuring the 1990s. The collection can’t possibly provide even a «taster» piece for all of them, so the remaining chapters present only a selection of the issues from different contending camps, from the so-called Chinese New Left and the independents to the Chinese liberals.

The issues covered include the ongoing class polarisation in China, the commodification and horrific deterioration of education, «historical amnesia» and the constitutional relations between citizens and the state. It asks whether inequity is a twin sister of efficiency, and whether the market is key to «modernity» @ https://www.greenleft.org.au/node/29935

og: MAO – THE UNKNOWN STORY, av JUNG CHANG og JON HALLIDAY, JONATHAN CAPE, LONDON 2005.

Jung Chang, author of the best-selling Wild Swans, and Jon Halliday, formerly the East Asian expert of the New Left Review editorial board, spent 10 years researching and writing this book. Their sources are not just written records and memoirs, but hundreds of interviews with participants, in China itself and internationally.

If even 20% of the facts about the modus operandi of the CCP and Mao [1] presented in this book are true (and that’s an absolute minimum) it is going to force many leftists – even those who were always critical of Mao and Maoism – to re-evaluate their views.

It seems obvious now that many of the opinions expressed in the pre-1976 period, even by critical Marxists, let alone Maoists and liberal Mao groupies like Edgar Snow and William Hinton (and Norwegian AKP/RV/Roed), were wildly optimistic about the regime in general, its attitude to the popular masses, its alleged ‘egalitarianism’ and the supposedly radical and revolutionary forces within sections of the student youth and workers during the Cultural Revolution.

    14) POETRY & PROTEST: A DENNIS BRUTUS READER, (ed) by Lee Sustar & Aisha Karim, Haymarket BNooks, Chicago, 2006, ISBN-13: 987 1 931859 22 6

    – BLUES PEOPLE , av den nyligen avdødad Amiri Baraka (f.d «LeRoi Jones» @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiri_Baraka: «Blues People (Negro Music in White America) is a seminal study of Afro-American music (and culture generally) by Amiri Baraka, who published it as LeRoi Jones in 1963.

In Blues People Baraka explores the possibility that the history of black Americans can be traced through the evolution of their music. It is considered a classic work on jazz and blues music in American culture. This book documents the effects jazz and blues had on America on an economic, musical, and social level…

To Baraka, Blues People represented “everything [he] had carried for years, what [he] had to say, and [himself].”

The book is deeply personal and chronicles what brought Baraka to believe that blues was a personal history of his people in the United States. The resonance and desperation within this type of music is what compelled Baraka to learn about the history of blues music. He learned through his studies that the “Africanisms” is directly related to American Culture, rather than being solely related to Black people.

Baraka dedicated the book to his parents … the first Negroes I ever met»), New York: William Morrow & Company, 1963. ISBN 0-688-18474-X; re-issued, Blues People: Negro Music in White America. Harper Perennial, ISBN 978-0688184742.

For a critical assessment of the output and poetry of Amiri Baraka, see:

Amiri Baraka (1934-2014): Poet, playwright, black nationalist, by Fred Mazelis, 18 January 2014, «Amiri Baraka (1934-2014): Poet, playwright, black nationalist»

extract: » … Amiri Baraka, the poet and playwright who died earlier this month at the age of 79, was long known for his embrace of the Black Nationalist outlook that characterized his political activity and much of his writing for the last five decades of his life.

There were numerous political twists and turns, some of them tortuous, in the course of those years, but a constant was Baraka’s view of race as the fundamental dividing line in American society.

This view fatally afflicted his literary and political efforts, essentially determining the character of his life and legacy.

Baraka was born Everett Leroy Jones in Newark, New Jersey. He became known professionally as LeRoi Jones until he embraced Islam in the mid-1960s and changed his name again, first to Imamu Ameer Baraka and then to Amiri Baraka.

As a somewhat troubled and alienated black intellectual in the years before the mass civil rights movement, Baraka studied at Rutgers, Howard University, Columbia and the New School in New York, obtaining a degree at none of these institutions.

He joined the Air Force, but was dishonorably discharged, reportedly after his possession of Marxist or “communist” literature was reported to his commander.

The young LeRoi Jones first came to prominence in New York City’s Greenwich Village around 1960. He had earlier introduced himself to poet Allen Ginsberg, and began to move in Beat poetry circles. In the late 1950s he had married Hettie Cohen in New York, and the two founded a quarterly literary magazine and were active in a number of other publishing ventures.

At this stage of his career Jones was not politically active, nor was he focused primarily on race, as he would be soon thereafter. He counted among his influences, in addition to the Beats, such figures as American poets Ezra Pound and Frank O’Hara.

Jones’s poetry from this period is marked by a concern for the events of daily existence and life in the big city. His poems are infused with an energy he shared with some of the other Beats.

There are references to race, and they can be seen perhaps as a premonition of his future direction, but they do not overwhelm his work as they later would.

Jones’s outlook began to change and to crystallize as the result of a trip he made to Cuba in 1960, after which he became a prominent supporter of Fidel Castro. In the early 1960s he also began to associate with figures in a nascent New York black nationalist literary scene.

Jones had a lifelong interest in jazz, and his 1963 book «Blues People: Negro Music in White America», his first major work, sheds important light on the aesthetic and political views he was developing at this time and that would shape the rest of his life.

These views, it might be added, also have larger significance in terms of the subsequent evolution of subjectivist (and counter-revolutionary – syg) «identity politics» and what would become known as postmodernism (sic).

Although Jones exhibits a good deal of knowledge of jazz history, his essentially race-based theory of musical development is embodied in the title of the book itself.

Of course the blues originated and developed as the music of the descendants of African-American slaves, but both the blues and especially the related development of jazz (and later «rock musaik») also borrowed European musical elements and therefore cannot simply be defined as “Negro music” without further qualification.

Just as significantly, as Jones himself is forced to admit, there was almost from its beginnings an interpenetration between African and European influences, a process that led to the further development of jazz, the uniquely American musical form.

Jones’s approach to aesthetics also contained echoes of “proletarian culture,” the conception encouraged by Stalinism that the working class—rather than assimilating everything progressive in contemporary culture and the whole history of its development in capitalist society in order to lay the basis for a new, socialist culture of the future—had to break from “bourgeois culture” and develop its own literature, art and music (see «proletarian culture», still elevated to a «special place» here in Norway! @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proletarian_culture.

Jones put forward similarly mechanical and fallacious conceptions, in the process more or less equating “black culture” with “proletarian culture.”

In this view, “Black” is associated with all that is life-affirming and proletarian, while “white” is identified with the effete and the middle class, with art as mere “artifact. … ”
